Analysis and Spatial Mapping of Christmas Island Fauna
Range to Reef Environmental undertook an assessment of abundance of the endangered Christmas Island giant gecko to help to understand the environmental factors affecting populations in National Park. The island was stratified into four zones and then further stratified by vegetation type using ArcGIS.
Randomised sites were selected from within these areas to undertake night-time spotlighting and measure other environmental factors. Data on predators, elevation, geology and aspect was extracted from the GIS system for each survey site.
Statistical analysis of the data was undertaken to assess the relationship between abundance and environmental factors and to produce a model of the varying population densities across the island.
