Clearing Permit Application for Mining Lease on Christmas Island

Range to Reef Environmental assisted PRL with the preparation of clearing permit application documents for Mining Lease 70/1A. The project included a comprehensive flora survey of regrowth vegetation in active mining lease areas to support the application. The mining lease included a condition that no clearing of primary rainforest occur within the lease so the survey was useful to separate regrowth from undisturbed vegetation. The survey also included a search for EPBC listed Threatened Flora species known to occur in the region so that these could be excluded from the proposal if they were found.

Range to Reef provided the following services in support of this Clearing Permit Application:

  • A desktop review of existing knowledge, gap analysis, constraints and risk assessment.

  • A comprehensive flora and vegetation assessment of proposed clearing areas.

  • Preparation of clearing permit application documentation and spatial data.

  • Liaison with Government officers assessing the application.

Positive outcomes achieved:

  • A reduction in the proposed clearing area to account for flora and vegetation values in the area and other site constraints.

  • Streamlined application process without the need to seek additional information.

  • Government guidelines for standard of survey work achieved.

  • Confidence that due diligence has been satisfied.
