Fauna and Flora survey for proposed exploration
on Christmas Island
Range to Reef Environmental undertook fauna and flora surveys in Exploration Licence area
ECI 70/2. The purpose of the surveys was to refine the proposed exploration area to account
for conservation values.
Range to Reef provided the following services to help refine the drilling programme:
A desktop review of existing knowledge, gap analysis, constraints and risk assessment.
Level 2 field surveys for birds, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates using hand-searches,
pitfall, Elliot and cage traps, Anabat® echolocation recording, night-time spotlighting, avifauna transects and camera traps.
Level 2 flora surveys and threatened flora searches.
Spatial and statistical analysis of the data recorded.
Positive outcomes achieved:
The data collected enabled a number of prospective drilling areas to be eliminated from the program.
Other areas were relocated, shortened or otherwise altered.
Conservation significant fauna species and habitat were protected.
The results of the surveys were used to prepare environmental approvals documents for later stages of the project.
