This month Andrew attended the Second World Heritage Marine Site Managers Conference in Corsica, France from 18-20 October as a representative of the Shark Bay World Heritage Area. Andrew is the current Chair of the Shark Bay World Heritage Advisory Committee and a member of the Australian World Heritage Areas Advisory Committee.
The meeting brought together managers from the 46 marine sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List to share management practices and knowledge. The World Heritage sites have a high diversity of social, economic and environmental settings but common issues were identified and explored with the aim of sharing best practice approaches to management. Key considerations included frameworks to demonstrate management effectiveness in maintaining the nominated World Heritage values.
Andrew also attended the concurrent International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC) in Marseille, France. The IMPAC is held once every four years and brings together MPA practitioners from around the World to discuss best practice approaches to the establishing, planning and management of MPAs.
