Range to Reef have recently completed an initial review into the environmental suitability of a proposed site for an Open Range Zoo in the Lower Chittering area. The project was undertaken for Perth Zoo and reviewed planning and environmental risks and opportunities associated with the potential use of the proposed site. The Avon Valley site has great potential however a number of more detailed environmental investigations are needed to inform further the planning and consideration of the proposed project.
Perth Zoo’s current 19 hectare site is no longer sufficient for open range animals and breeding opportunities have decreased for some of these species over the past 16 years. Australia currently has four open range zoos - Werribee Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria, Taronga Western Plains Zoo in New South Wales, and Monarto Zoo in South Australia.
